ESG — Environmental, Social and Governance — has become a defining framework for measuring corporate sustainability and long-term value. While early focus was placed on environmental and governance factors, the “social” pillar is now gaining increasing prominence, driven by evolving workforce expectations, regulatory developments, and the demands of a globalised economy.
This dimension encompasses a wide range of issues, including diversity and inclusion, workplace safety, data privacy, employee well-being, and fair working conditions. Among these, work flexibility and work-life balance have emerged as particularly relevant, accelerated by recent global developments and shifting workplace dynamics.
In this first insight of our ESG in Employment series, we examine the legal frameworks governing work flexibility and work-life balance across Southeast Europe. While the region shares common foundations, approaches vary significantly between jurisdictions — highlighting both progress and areas for further development.
Our aim is to provide a clear and practical overview of these evolving standards, supporting businesses in navigating regulatory differences while fostering modern, resilient, and employee-focused workplaces.
