Modernisation of National Railway Lines Update

January 2022 The Bulgarian national company “Railway Infrastructure” (NCRI) has announced an investment proposal for the modernisation of the railway line Vidin – Medkovets, railway section I of the railway line Vidin – Sofia. The project includes the construction of a new catenary, construction of a railway, railway facilities, and new railway stations. The project amount is expected to be around EUR 460 million. NNDKP has successfully assisted and represented a private company in a dispute resolved by the Bucharest Court of Appeals, concerning the requirements imposed on tenderers in a public tender procedure organised for the modernisation of a Romanian railway line.

Rehabilitation of the Tirana-Durres Railway Line and Construction of a New Railway Line to Tirana International Airport

The Project consists of the rehabilitation of the existing railway line between the cities of Tirana and Durres and construction of a new railway line connecting the Tirana-Durres line with the Tirana International Airport (TIA). In October 2020 a contract of 30 months with a price of EUR 69,691,711.57 was awarded to the Italian company INC S.P.A. following an international tender launched by the Ministry of Infrastructure and EBRD. The company is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary permits for starting construction works.

Construction of a Fast Railway Track Connecting Belgrade and Nis

According to the anouncements made by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, this will be an investment of around EUR 2 billion to be implemented with the Chinese company CRBC. Despite the government's intention to develop the project together with CRBC, the EU delegation stated that it is still ready to finance this project.

Public Projects in Motorways and Railway Infrastructure

A building permit is currently being obtained for the construction of a section of the motorway from the Obrezje near Novo mesto junction to the Osredek junction. According to the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia (“DARS”), the works for this section will cost just under EUR 95 million. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of next year and be completed by the end of 2023.
