North Macedonia Joins the Alexandroupolis LNG Project
The Government of North Macedonia announced that the country will join the project for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Alexandroupolis, developed by Gastrade, a Greek utility company. The project includes construction of а floating station, 17 km from Alexandroupolis, for temporary storage and gasification of LNG, with a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters, and a capacity for natural gas supply of over 5.5 billion cubic meters.
The participation in the Alexandroupolis LNG project, which is expected to become operational in 2023, will provide North Macedonia with a permanent supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan, and connection to the LNG terminals in Greece. Experts say that in addition to Russian gas, which now reaches North Macedonia via Bulgaria, the Alexandroupolis LNG project will provide the country with quantities of cheaper and more environmentally friendly energy.
This project will enable North Macedonia to become an energy corridor, through which it could distribute natural gas from Greece to the countries in the region. According to estimates, energy connection with Greece will cost EUR 55 million, with EUR 13 million already obtained through European funds. Final preparations are underway for announcing a tender for the construction of this interconnector from Negotino (North Macedonia) to Nea Mesimvria (Greece).
