Legal Restriction of Trans Fat in Foodstuffs in Slovenia
Legal Restriction of Trans Fat in Foodstuffs in Slovenia
Rules governing the maximum permitted level of trans fatty acids (trans fats) in foodstuffs were adopted in Slovenia on 19 March 2018, shortly after their reduction was included as a strategic objective of the Slovenian National Program on Diet and Physical Activity for Health 2015-2025.
At the beginning of April, a 12-month transition period allowing for stock depletion will come to an end, and foodstuffs with a high trans fat content may no longer be sold.
The maximum level of trans fats permitted by the Rules to be sold in Slovenia will be 2 g per 100 g of total fat content. This applies to vegetable oils, fats and fat emulsions and any foodstuffs containing such oils, fats and fat emulsions. The limit does not, however, apply to animal oils and fats or to those foodstuffs in which trans fats occur as an integral part and as a result of their natural presence in animal oils and fats.
The Rules limit the content of trans fats in all foodstuffs, regardless of their country of origin. Restrictions also apply to meals in restaurants, and foodstuffs sold by patisseries, bakeries and other mass caterers. In the event of non-compliance with the Rules, the foodstuffs and raw materials will be withdrawn from sale. Fines for legal entities start from EUR 2,000.
