Kanal Istanbul

“Kanal Istanbul” is one of Turkish mega infrastructural projects.

The project aims to create a waterway between the Marmara Sea and Karadeniz as an alternative route to Bosphorus. The total length of this waterway is expected to be around 43 km with six new bridges. The total investment amount for the project is expected to be around TRY 75 billion (approx. EUR 11.7 billion).

The relevant authorisation procedures have been completed (subject to certain objection) and it has been resolved that the project will be tendered with the BOT model.

The tender for the first phase of Kanal Istanbul has taken place on 26 March 2020 where five companies have bid for the planning work regarding reconstruction of two historic bridges (Odabaşı and Dursunköy), located in the contemplated route of Kanal Istanbul. There is no publicly available information as to when the tenders regarding the next phases will be carried out.
