Belene Nuclear Power Plant Update

At the end of 2019, the state announced that the officially shortlisted candidates to begin negotiations with include Atomenergoprom, China National Nuclear Corporation, Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Corporation, Framatome, and General Electric.
On 2 April 2020, shortlisted companies have entered into a Non-Disclosure Agreement in order to perform due diligence and submit their binding offers. Due to the situation with the COVID-19 virus, at the end of April postponement of the deadlines for conducting the tender was announced. The new deadlines for extension of the tender procedures will depend on the duration of the pandemic restrictions. Тhe initially defined term for submitting binding offers was 31 May 2020, but due to the pandemic situation, the term for submitting binding offers will start running as of the date on which the candidates are provided with access to the physical data room.
At the end of 2020, the possibility for the building of a new nuclear power unit on the site of the existing Kozloduy NPP was announced, therefore, the suspension of the project and using available equipment for Unit 7 of Kozloduy NPP is now considered. Currently, there is no further information on the development of the NPP Belene project.
Following the formation of the new Bulgarian parliament at the end of 2021, a decision on whether to proceed with Belene NPP or a new unit of Kozloduy NPP to be built should be expected.
Unofficially, the financial frame for building NPP Belene is expected to be around EUR 10 billion.
