In its recent newsletter, the IP team of our member firm Kyriakides Georgopoulos Law Firm shared thoughts regarding the adoption of the new Greek Law 5271/2026, which representes a significant step forward and a turning point for the protection of artworks and collectible objects in Greece.
Greek law did not previously provide a dedicated legal framework to address significant risks faced by the art market and the country’s cultural heritage: forgery, unlawful circulation, damage and destruction of artworks. This new Law seeks to close that gap by introducing a specific criminal offence covering the manufacture, falsification and circulation of forged artworks and amending the Greek Penal Code to criminalise the damage or destruction of publicly displayed artworks.
